What You Need To Know About NYSC Orientation Camp

The orientation course is the very first task that prospective corps members have to undertake in their mandatory 12-month service year. The course holds in every state of the federation at various orientation camps.
DURATION:
The orientation course holds for three weeks – 21 days (usually from Tuesday to Tuesday). Registration commences on the Tuesday the camp opens and closes usually the following day, Wednesday by 12 midnight. At the end of the course, corps members are given posting letters to their various places of primary assignment.
REGISTRATION:
Every corps member should ensure that he/she is properly registered at the Registration Centre. All forms inside the file given by the documentation officers should be studied carefully and properly completed. Temporary I.D. Card/Code Card will be issued during registration. Corps members are to clip this I.D. Card to their dress at all times while the orientation course lasted. The NYSC I.D. Card which is to be used for the duration of the service will be issued later on during the orientation course while the Temporary I.D. will be collected back by the documentation officers. Please note that the NYSC I.D. Card will be retrieved at the end of the service year.

ACCOMMODATION:
Accommodation is provided on basis of first come, first served. Note that it is the duty of corps members to take proper care of their mattresses, and ensure that the hostels are clean throughout the period of the orientation course.
FEEDING:
Corps members will be centrally fed throughout the Orientation period. Upon the completion of registration, meal tickets will be issued to corps members containing their code numbers and photographs. Note that the meal ticket is a security document and cannot be replaced if lost. Corp members will be called upon to participate in cooking and serving of food on platoon basis.
PLATOON AND PLATOON ACTIVITIES:
One of the major high points of the orientation course is the platoon and inter-platoon activities. There are ten platoons on camp, Platoons 1 to 10. Every corps member automatically belongs to one of these platoons. The distribution into various platoons is done by the Administrative Officers at the registration point based on the last digit of your registration number. For instance, if your number is 0042, you belong to No. 2 Platoon. If your number is 0779, you belong to No. 9 Platoon.
Most of the activities on camp like physical training, early morning drills, and endurance trek will be carried out on platoon basis. So your platoon is like your own clique.
Another really interesting aspect of the course is the Inter-platoon competitions. Prizes are awarded to the best platoons in such activities as quiz competition, cooking competition, socials etc.

KITS ITEMS:
Kit items will be issued to every corps member during the registration. They include the following:

Any act of indiscipline during the orientation and indeed throughout the service year shall be visited with appropriate sanction. Patriotic actions shall be appreciated, acknowledged and rewarded.

Every camp resident has a responsibility to be vigilant and security conscious. Campers are hereby advised to take proper care of their valuables. The NYSC Management has no policy which offers replacement of or compensation for lost items. The police have the primary duty to protect life, property and ensure general security on the camp. Campers should endeavour to cooperate with the law enforcement officers.
I.D. CARD:
The importance of identity card cannot be overemphasized. It is a document which each corps member must carry at all times. It must be produced on demand. If lost, an official report must be made by the bearer to the Camp Director. I.D. Cards are however replaced on payment of a fee of N200 and submission of police report, a court affidavit and an application letter.
MEDICARE:
24 hours medical care is provided on camp at the camp clinic manned by Corps Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, etc. Corps members are warned against self-medication, except prescription by personal physicians.
CAMP MARKET:
At the orientation camp, there is the price monitoring committee charged with the task of ensuring that traders sell quality products at reasonable prices to corps members.
ORIENTATION BROADCASTING SERVICE (OBS):
The OBS is the only recognized media outfit at the camp. This service is designed for corps members where camp news, events and announcements are relayed to them. The OBS functions are carried out by corps members. In this wise, all mass communication and English graduates plus graduates from allied disciplines as well as those who have interest are to present themselves for this task at the camp. Technicians are also very much needed to facilitate the smooth running of the OBS.
SOCIALS:
Every evening, after the rigorous activities of the day, the NYSC has organized various social engagements for fun-filled relaxation. There will also be inter-platoon competitions in drills, drama and other cultural shows.
POSTING:
Deliberate efforts will be made to ensure that corps members are posted to places relevant to their specific discipline and skill where their services are most needed. It is however hoped that where this is not possible, the affected corps member should show understanding and maturity in the spirit of national service.
RELOCATION:
This is the process by which a corps member seeks to leave one state for another. This can only be approved on the grounds of:
(a)    Health: This has to be affirmed by a comprehensive doctor’s report.
(b)   Marriage: A female corps member who gets married before or during the service year automatically gets qualified for relocation. In this case, marriage certificate has to be attached to the application for relocation.
EXEAT:
Corps members must obtain exeat before going out of camp. The Camp Director gives exeat when necessary and such corps members should go out in their NYSC uniform. Permission will not be granted to travel outside the State during orientation course except with the permission of the State Coordinator when absolutely necessary.
G.S.M. OPERATIONS:
Arrangement will be made with GSM Operators to maintain service on the camp to enable corps communicate with their relations and friends during the orientation course. Services by these operators are however not free.
