Mobile Number Portabilty: The What, The How and The When...(All You Need To Know) PART II

Welcome again, dear reader. This is a new era, the era of porting out and porting in.

I strongly advise that you read the PART I of this article if you have not already done so. The PART I is the introductory part where I laid the foundation on which this PART II is built.

What are the requirements for porting?

  • A valid means of Identification. This could be your International Passport, Driver's License, National ID Card, Voter's Card etc. I suggest that if possible you go there with the photocopy too to speed up the process.

  • Also go along with the SIM card you want to port because you will be required to send a mandatory  SMS there and then to 3232 in order to  initiate the porting process.

  •  The SIM card must be active and must have been registered.
NOTE: Porting cannot be done by proxy. That means the owner of the SIM must be at the recipient's office in person.

How Much Does It Cost To Port?

Porting Out and Porting In is absolutely free of charge. However, you cannot transfer any unused airtime and data from the donor to the recipient.

How Long Does The Porting Process Take?

The process should take no more than 48 hours. You will receive an alert confirming that the process is complete.

NOTE: You can only make the switch once in 90 days. That is, if you port a particular number today, you cannot port it again until after 90 days.

This process will certainly favour the telecoms subscribers as there will be stiff competition like never before now.

So where are you porting to and why?

See for yourself, Saka of etisalat has already ported in to MTN in a reported Twenty Million Naira deal.
